Librarian's Day 2022

The novel ideas and works of the people are alwaysrecognized by the future generation. Dr S R Ranganathan is one such greatpersonality. He is considered as the Father of Library movement in India. A mathematician by qualification, passed his MA in mathematics in 1920 fromMadras University, appointed as assistant lecturer in Mathematics from MadrasUniversity and taught mathematics till 1924. Later because of his interest inLibraries, he turned to be a great Library and Information Science scientist. Beinga widely travelled person for acquiring knowledge in Library Science, he contributedmore than 2000 research papers and more than 60 research books which areconsidered as the noble contributions to science discipline. He also edited 4journals in Library Science. These contributions are recognized in theinternational level. By considering his contributions, British Govt awarded RaoSaheb award in 1935, American Govt awarded Margarett Man award in 1970, many Universities andresearch organizations awarded him doctorate degrees. He draftedTamil Nadu Public Library Bill in 1948. It is the mile stone in the field oflibrary movement in India. The Tamil Nadu Govt. passed this Bill as the TamilNadu Public Library Bill in 1948. So far 20 States have enacted Public LibraryBills in India. By considering his hard work and dedication, theGovt. of India honoured him with Padmashree award in 1957. The Govt. of India as well as Govt. of Karnataka have declared Aug,12th as Librarians’ day. In this connection in India, librariescelebrate Dr. S R Ranganathan’s birth day (12th Aug) as Librarian’sDay.
