A Role play event on the infamous Harshad Mehta Scam of 1992 was organized under the banner of the Commerce Association on 11th October 2025 Saturday at 2:00 PM in the I B.Com classroom.

The event was conceptualized to provide students with a practical and engaging understanding of one of the most significant financial frauds in Indian history, aiming to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world financial events.

The session was graced by the presence of Prof. Saritha Reena D’Souza Madam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce, who served as the resource person for the programme. Also in attendance were Mr. Mohammad Mustafa Sir, Coordinator of Professional B.Com, and Mr. G. Harish Pai, Assistant Professor and Convenor of the Commerce Association, who both appreciated the students' efforts and emphasized the value of experiential learning in commerce education.

The role play was creatively enacted by the students of I B.Com, who portrayed various characters involved in the scam, including Harshad Mehta himself, bank officials, stock exchange brokers, journalists, CBI investigators, and common investors.

The enactment vividly depicted the sequence of events leading to the scam, including how Harshad Mehta manipulated the stock market using fake bank receipts (BRs), exploited loopholes in the banking system, and artificially inflated stock prices.

Following the role play, a group discussion was held, moderated by Prof. Saritha Reena D’Souza. The discussion allowed students to reflect on key takeaways from the scam, including the ethical dimensions of financial practices, the need for transparent regulatory mechanisms, and the importance of investor awareness. Students actively participated in the discussion, voicing their opinions on how such frauds could be prevented and what lessons young professionals in the field of commerce should draw from such incidents. The dialogue was thought-provoking and fostered critical thinking among the participants.

Overall, the programme was a great success, with students demonstrating commendable enthusiasm, teamwork, and analytical thinking. The event not only deepened their understanding of financial fraud and market operations but also instilled a sense of responsibility and ethics essential for future professionals in commerce.
